For years, Hayden knew something wasn’t right.
When Hayden was in college, life began to feel overwhelming. His mind often raced faster than he could control. Periods of anxiety, isolation, and emotional highs left him struggling to understand what was happening. Those challenges eventually led to a diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder, a diagnosis that finally gave a name to what he had been experiencing.
But receiving a diagnosis wasn’t the end of the journey. He began medication and while this became an important part of his treatment, Hayden knew he needed more than medical care alone. In 2016, Hayden came to Christian Family Solutions looking for something he desperately needed: a safe place to be honest about the burdens he was carrying.
“I came to CFS for a safe space to work through my mental and emotional burdens. Trying to think through things on my own hadn’t resulted in the best decisions throughout my life.”
What followed was a counseling relationship that would span about ten years.
Through regular sessions with his counselor, Hayden learned practical tools for managing his thoughts, emotions, and mental well-being. He processed difficult experiences, worked through the trauma connected to past episodes, and gained confidence in navigating life with bipolar disorder. Counseling became a place where he could honestly process his experiences, gain perspective, and continue moving forward.
“A really big thing that I always appreciated was how safe I felt.”
That sense of safety allowed Hayden to talk openly about fears, struggles, and questions he had carried for years. Counseling became a place where healing could happen, one conversation at a time.
His faith was also woven throughout the process.
“We talked about God quite a bit. That definitely has been a big pillar and foundation for my journey.”
As counseling continued, Hayden began seeing real progress. He developed healthy coping skills, learned how to recognize warning signs, and found greater stability through counseling, medication, supportive relationships, and his faith in Christ.
Today, Hayden’s life looks very different than it did a decade ago.
Recently discharged from counseling, he now uses what he has learned to encourage and support others. Whether serving in his church, mentoring others, or simply creating a safe place for someone to share their struggles, Hayden hopes to offer the same support he once received.
“The big impact it’s had for me is advocating for counseling and trying to live that safety for others.”
For anyone facing mental health challenges, Hayden wants them to know there is hope.
“Find people you feel safe with and start talking about these things—the thoughts, the feelings, and the complexities of whatever mental challenge you’re struggling with.”
Healing doesn’t happen overnight. Hayden’s story is proof that growth often happens through years of faithful support, trusted relationships, and God’s ongoing work in our lives. What began as a search for help became a journey toward hope and a future he once struggled to imagine.
