When You Feel Overwhelmed - Christian Family Solutions

When you’re doing everything right…but still feel like you’re about to snap

by Kent Robinson, MA, LPC

You’re doing everything right: showing up, serving others, holding it all together. But why do you still feel like you’re about to snap?

Mental health struggles aren’t always loud or visible. Sometimes, they show up as slow burnout, emotional numbness, or the quiet weight of carrying too much for too long. And often, they’re fueled by one of the most dangerous and overlooked conditions in our lives: disconnection.

We’re Not Meant to Do This Alone

Tomato plants offer a surprisingly vivid picture of what happens when we try to carry life’s weight unsupported. They grow fast and bear fruit generously, but without a trellis or gardener’s care, their vines tangle, droop, and eventually crack under the weight of their own fruit. Left unpropped, they’re vulnerable to disease, pests, and decay. It doesn’t matter how good the soil is. Without connection to the vine and to the structure that holds them up, they break.

Human beings are no different.

We can be surrounded by good things – family, friends, ministry, careers – and still feel ourselves bending under the pressure. The truth is, bearing fruit can be heavy. And if we’re isolated and unsupported while doing it, we’re more likely to break.

Our counselors talk often about compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma, the toll it takes when people pour out constantly without being filled. This isn’t just a problem for ministry or healthcare professionals. Parents, caregivers, and even youth and teens can feel it too.

But healing begins with reconnection.

Psychology Supports What Scripture Has Always Said

Secular research continues to affirm something we’ve known all along: people thrive when they’re connected, especially to something larger than themselves. Individuals who regularly engage in spiritual practices tend to experience lower levels of anxiety and stress, and higher levels of resilience and emotional regulation.

At Christian Family Solutions, we believe not all spirituality is created equal. True healing and sustaining hope doesn’t come from vague mindfulness or inner positivity. It comes from being rooted in Jesus Christ.

He said it clear and plain: “I am the vine; you are the branches... Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). He is the source of life, strength, peace, and purpose. When we remain in Him, we grow. When we disconnect, we wither.

Faith Isn't a Shortcut. It’s a Lifeline

We don’t offer Christ-centered counseling because it sounds nice. We offer it because it works. Not as a quick fix or spiritual bypass, but because the Gospel gets to the root of our pain. Jesus doesn’t just empathize with our suffering. He enters into it. He meets us at our weakest and says, "You’re not alone. Let me carry this with you."

That’s why connection, both to Christ and to others, is essential. Faith without community is fragile. And service without support will eventually collapse. But when we stay rooted in Him and surround ourselves with a network of grace-filled support, we bear fruit that lasts.

Three Ways to Stay Connected

1. Reconnect to the Source – Even if it’s simply ten minutes, spend time daily in prayer or Scripture. Not out of obligation but because your soul needs to recharge.

2. Check in with someone – Ask, call, or text a friend, colleague, or family member and ask, “How are you really doing?” Then listen without judgment.

3. Ask for help – If what you’re carrying feels too heavy, it’s not a failure to ask for help. Talk with a friend, co-worker, or family member you trust. Also consider professional counseling.

We believe that mental health care is most effective when it’s anchored in the hope of the Gospel. You’re not meant to bear fruit alone, and you’re not meant to break. Let’s stay connected, together.
