Let’s Talk About Suicide: How to recognize the warning signs and what to do next
Length: 30 or 60 minutes
This brief presentation gives an overview of risk factors for suicide as well as warning signs. It includes practical advice for how to proceed if you think someone might be having suicidal thoughts as well as some guidelines of how not to respond. It also includes resources for you to use yourself or pass along to the student. This is meant to be an interactive presentation with time for questions and discussion. My goal is to provide you with practical, useful information that you can use with your students and to answer any questions you might have about this challenging topic. Let’s talk.

QPR is an innovative, practical, and proven suicide prevention training. In this training, you will learn three simple steps – questioning, persuading, and referring individuals in crisis to appropriate care and resources – that can help to save lives. This program trains gatekeepers, or anyone who is in a position to recognize and respond to someone in crisis. Gatekeepers can be anyone, and include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, pastors, healthcare workers, office supervisors, squad leaders, foreman, law enforcement officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many other community members who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone who is at risk of suicide.
Just as CPR is designed to stabilize and sustain someone in a health crisis, until they can be helped by medical professionals, QPR is designed to identify and interrupt a mental health crisis by directing someone to professional help and care. Both CPR and QPR increase the chance of survival in the event of a crisis.
Trainings are 1-2 hours long and are taught by certified QPR trainers. Trainings can be customized for groups, such as youth service workers, coaches, school staff, healthcare workers, law enforcement officers, pastors, and faith-based organizations.
