The Internet, Facebook, text messages, e-mail, chat rooms, cell phones, computers, laptops, and tablets can all have tremendous benefit for the user. However, they can also pose dangers and temptations that 21st-century kids and parents need to know about to have fun safely when using these technologies. In this seminar, participants will discuss ways to make the most of technologies while avoiding the pitfalls.

Bullying: Fighting Fear with Love

Length: 30 or 60 minutes
Intended Audience: Parents of high school or grade school children

This presentation examines the problem of bullying by considering the definition and prevalence of bullying, and by profiling both the bully and the victim. We will discuss what parents, children, and schools can do to confront the problem of bullying and help the victims, as well as what can be done if you are the parent of a bully.

Notes: In addition to being a 60-minute in-person presentation, this presentation can also be shortened to 30 minutes and delivered via video-conferencing, which would be perfectly suited to faculty meetings, circuit pastor gatherings, conferences, or other events. The presentation is practical and allows for questions and discussion.

Children of Trauma and Resilience

Intended Audience: Anyone who works with children, adolescents, families, or communities

Description: This course introduces participants to a trauma-informed and resilience-focused mindset and teaches participants about toxic stress and trauma, how to help process those experiences and how to foster and nurture characteristics of resilience. It begins with a strong focus on resilience and includes an exploration of how core values and beliefs direct the way professionals work with children. The four universal needs of all human beings as explained by the Circle of Courage® model including belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity are explained and discussed. Participants learn about the experience of trauma as one that impacts a person’s body and shown a demonstration of trauma’s impact on the brain. Participants learn the importance of sensory-based interventions and how to assess a child’s private logic and universal needs. Finally, participants practice the development of trauma-informed and resil­ience-focused support plans for youth.

Note: This training is best delivered in person. A guidebook will need to be purchased for each participant. The cost for these as of August 2022 is $25 per digital guidebook or $35 per printed guidebook. At least three weeks’ notice is required to order these.

Loving and Leading—Building a Strong Parent-Child Relationship

This presentation focuses on building strong relationships with our children through love and discipline.  We consider ways to effectively love our children in their “love language,” and look at the definition and application of discipline in the Christian home.

Peer Pressure: Helping Godly Kids and Teens Resist Ungodly Temptations

This presentation is designed for children, tweens, teens, and their parents. In a fun, interactive style, participants will learn more about what peer pressure is and ways to resist it. Parents will be given strategies to help empower their family members. All recommendations are based on Scripture, which is highlighted throughout.

Shaping Responsible Behavior

In our current culture of blame-shifting and irresponsibility, it is especially important for parents to learn ways to shape responsible behavior in their children. This presentation will look at the benefits of responsible behavior, as well as specific examples and suggestions for parents to use as they shape responsibility through tasks, discipline, and service.

Structured Sensory Interventions II

Intended Audience: Clinical professionals who work in agency or other non-educational settings

Description: This course takes participants deeper into the brain science of trauma and toxic stress. The polyvagal theory, epigenetics and the science of resilience is explored. The content emphasizes the importance of hope when working with at-risk and traumatized youth. Participants learn about the SITCAP® model (Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents and Parents) and practice sensory based interventions from a variety of SITCAP® model programs including Healing the Experience of Trauma: A Path to Resilience. Experiential activities and the presentation of case examples showcase how to process trauma, nurture and restore resilience in youth of all ages.

Description: This course focuses on the Connecting Principles of Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®). TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection.

Description: This course focuses on the Correcting Principles of Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®).TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. Correcting the behaviors of vulnerable children can be challenging, as traditional methods of discipline may increase fear and trigger further behavioral challenges. This course shows how to correct behaviors while still providing felt safety to the child.

Learning the many ways it is important to meet the child’s physical needs is fundamental in order to later implement the Connecting and Correcting Principles.
