Responding to Sexual Assault: The Risk of Attribution of Fault
Length: 60 minutes
Intended Audience: Young adults/adults/caregivers OR clinicians
Cost: MAP: $250/Non-MAP: $350 (plus expenses)
Hearing the news that someone you know has undergone sexual assault can be extremely challenging. However, this is a topic of great importance, as reactions and responses from loved ones or caregivers can heavily influence how a victim interprets the assault. This presentation will introduce the pervasiveness of sexual assault and why it is something that is under-reported. Specific topics addressed include how to appropriately respond with aid and compassion when a client or loved one discloses a history of undergoing sexual assault, and the large risk of attribution of fault depending on the types of responses. Finally, this presentation will tie back to the over-arching goal of helping the harmed individual transition from “victim” to “survivor” of sexual assault.
