From silence to strength

Stories of Healing and Hope

How one woman’s courage turned pain into purpose

Donna never expected her story to be told. For most of her life, she carried it in silence. But the weight of childhood abuse, the shame of secrets, and the trauma that resurfaced years later nearly broke her.

She was nine when the abuse began.

Her grandfather, a trusted family figure, told her if she spoke up, her parents would die from the shock. When her father passed from a heart attack just a few years later, Donna believed it was her fault.

“From the time I was nine until my dad died when I was twelve, I never said a word. I thought I killed him by keeping that secret.”

That silence became her way of survival. But Donna carried on, with the help of journaling and her church community.

Music also helped Donna cope. As a child, when she couldn’t speak about her pain, a music teacher encouraged her to sing and play her pain and secrets away. Over the years, her guitar especially became a refuge.

“I buried myself in music. My guitar was how I learned to communicate with Christ. When I play and sing, that’s where I feel vulnerable in God’s arms, where I can pray through the music.”

Donna married, raised children, and worked hard. But the past lingered, unresolved. Then, in 2015, during a workplace training, Donna was drugged and sexually assaulted.

“I woke up in a hotel room. I didn’t have my clothes. I didn’t know where I was. And I had no memory of what had happened.”

She didn’t speak of it right away—not until months later, when the memories flooded back suddenly and without warning. The trauma of that day unlocked everything from her childhood.

A Long Road to Healing

That’s when God placed people in her life who wouldn’t let her suffer alone, including her best friend Barb, a devoted pastor, and eventually, a Christian Family Solutions counselor.

“I sat through my first session with Sarah and didn’t say a word. But she didn’t push me. She just waited.”

Over the next three years, Donna met with her counselor every other week. Slowly, with care and prayer, she began to open up. It wasn’t just therapy. It was transformation.

“God didn’t cause the pain. Evil did. But He never stopped loving me through it.”

Christian Family Solutions provided more than counseling. It provided a place where Donna could speak freely, without shame. Where she could cry, question, and rebuild. Where someone saw her not just as a survivor, but as a woman deeply loved by God.

From Silence to Strength

Today, Donna is healing both emotionally and spiritually. She also mentors younger women who are hurting. And though her faith was tested, it is stronger now than ever before.

“I used to ask, where was God when all this happened? But now I know. He was right there. He put the right people in my life. He didn’t leave me.”

Donna has not yet even told her children the full extent of her story. But she’s starting to share more, as part of her journey to reclaim her voice and use it to help others who may be hurting.

“One day, I think I could stand in front of people and tell them what happened to me. I think I’m ready. I want them to know healing is possible.”
