Mindful Breathing

by Kara Witthuhn, CPPS, CTRS-E

What is mindful breathing?

Mindful breathing is a simple yet powerful technique that involves focusing on your breath to calm both your body and mind. It’s especially helpful during moments of stress, anxiety, or overwhelm, such as before a big test or presentation.

Why does mindful breathing work?

Mindful breathing is effective because it addresses both the physical (physiological) and mental (psychological) responses that occur during stress.

Physiological Benefits for Your Body

1. Activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System
Slow, deep breathing signals your body to shift from "fight or flight" mode (sympathetic nervous system) to "rest and digest" mode (parasympathetic nervous system). This results in a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, and relaxed muscles.

2. Balances Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Levels
Stress can lead to shallow, rapid breathing (hyperventilation), which upsets the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood. This imbalance may cause dizziness, chest tightness, or other symptoms of anxiety. Controlled breathing restores this balance, helping you feel more grounded.

3. Lowers Cortisol Levels
Deep, rhythmic breathing reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, helping to ease physical tension and promote a sense of calm.

Psychological Benefits for Your Mental/Emotional State

1. Shifts Attention
Anxiety often brings racing thoughts and "what-if" worries. Mindful breathing redirects your focus to the rhythm of your breath, anchoring you in the present moment and breaking the cycle of intrusive thoughts.

2. Restores a Sense of Control
Anxiety can leave you feeling powerless. Mindful breathing offers a simple, intentional practice that empowers you to take control of your mental state.

3. Interrupts Negative Thought Cycles
Anxiety thrives on spiraling worries. The steady rhythm of mindful breathing interrupts these patterns, creating space for clarity and calm.

4. Enhances Mind-Body Awareness
Paying attention to your breath helps you tune into your body's signals, enabling you to recognize tension before it escalates.

Spiritual Reinforcement

When combined with scripture or prayer, mindful breathing can further calm anxiety, deepen your trust in God, and remind you of His promises. Reflecting on verses like “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) can help shift your focus from fear to faith. This spiritual connection brings additional comfort, reassurance, and peace.
