Ministry Stories: John’s battle for godly living

“What happens when the world and the world’s Creator are telling you different things?”

Pastor James Mattek served as Director of Ministry at Christian Family Solutions for 20 years. During that time, many of his weekends were spent guest preaching and leading Bible studies at congregations across the country. He had the opportunity to share the healing power of the Gospel and shed light on many troubling mental health challenges. Among the many memories from his ministry, this story is a moment that stands out for Pastor Mattek.

In today’s society, we are encouraged by celebrities, athletes, and influencers to think, feel, and say whatever we want. “Live the life that you want to live, because who cares what anyone else thinks?”

As Christians, we follow what God says. So what happens when the world and the world’s Creator are telling us different things?

This was a problem that John* struggled with. Pastor Mattek was visiting churches on the West Coast, presenting information to congregations about Christian Family Solutions. After his presentation, he was approached by John, who asked if they could speak privately. In the confines of a quiet room, John opened his heart to Pastor Mattek:

“Pastor Mattek, I am happily married, I have children, I am the chairman of my congregation, and I have struggled with same-sex attraction for as long as I can remember. After struggling with this my whole life, I have been able to find ways to manage this burden that are pleasing to my Lord, all with the help of a counselor at Christian Family Solutions.”

Instead of going with the flow and being swept away by the world’s fast-moving current, John chose to anchor himself to The Rock, his Savior. With the help of counselors at Christian Family Solutions, John is now equipped with tools that help him live a God-pleasing life and to fight the temptations that the world throws at him.

Sometimes you will feel too tired to fight your battles, and you may be tempted to give in and “go with the flow”. That’s when you must reach out to others for help. You can turn to trained professionals, such as CFS counselors, who will help guide you through uncertain times. But most importantly, turn to your Savior, who has already fought and won all of your battles for you.

“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.” (Psalm 18:2A)
