She obtained her Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in Maternal-Child Nursing and taught in several nursing programs, while also working as a nurse. She developed a passion for mental health care of children and pursued her doctorate in clinical psychology at the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology, training at both Mayo Clinic and Olmsted Medical Group in Rochester, Minnesota. Her psychology internship was at the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota, which confirmed her desire to work in preventive mental health with children. For the past 25 years, she has worked in several psychiatric and group mental health clinics, as well as a county agency, providing psychology and child psychiatry services to children and adults. Dr. Allen has also served in the community, for the past 12 years, as the Clinical Director of Compassion Counseling Center, a ministry which provides free mental health care to those who are struggling, using the services of trained lay counselors. This work has been honored by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), both at the district and the State level.
